The Story Behind the Timber
Every piece of the ‘On Edge’ frame has a story to tell. The timber comes from a structure located on Balcombe Road, Beaumaris, Victoria. This structure dates back to 1974-1975, but the timber is much older, having served as cladding on the walls of the house. The Douglas fir (known scientifically as Pseudotsuga menziesii) used in this frame has weathered decades of exposure, giving it a beautifully aged appearance.
The Vintage Look: Weathered Beauty
One of the most unique aspects of the ‘On Edge’ frame is its weather-beaten appearance. The timber has retained remnants of its past, including traces of green paint—a colour that was popular in the 1970s. This subtle detail gives the frame a nostalgic touch, making it a perfect conversation piece for any room. The natural wear from decades of exposure adds character and depth, ensuring that no two frames are exactly alike.
From Raw Timber to Finished Frame
When Mulbury receives the timber, it arrives in its raw, weathered state. The team then carefully cleans and dresses the wood to reveal its true beauty. Once oiled, the timber takes on a warm honey glow, enhancing the natural grain and texture of the Douglas fir. This transformation is a testament to Mulbury’s craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Why It’s Called ‘On Edge’
Unlike conventional frames that lie flat, the ‘On Edge’ frame is, as the name suggests, placed on its edge. This design gives it a modern twist, allowing the frame to stand upright and present your artwork in a bold and striking way. The frame’s depth—4 cm from the back to the front—also creates a sense of dimension that’s perfect for contemporary interiors.
Frame Dimensions and Sizing Options
The ‘On Edge’ frame is available in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. You can choose from standard sizes like 7x5, 8x6, 8x10, A4, and A3. The smaller frames can stand on their own, thanks to the sturdy 4 cm depth. The A3 size, while strung for both portrait and landscape orientations, requires wall mounting due to its larger size.
Displaying Your 'On Edge' Frame
One of the standout features of the ‘On Edge’ frame is its versatility. Whether you prefer portrait or landscape, this frame can do both. The 4 cm depth also allows smaller frames to stand independently, making them ideal for shelves, desks, or mantles. However, larger sizes, like A3, are designed for wall hanging and provide an impressive backdrop for larger artworks.
The Unique Finish: Warm Honey Glow
After the timber is cleaned and dressed, it is oiled to bring out its natural beauty. The result? A warm honey glow that enhances the grain and texture of the Douglas fir, giving it a luxurious yet rustic finish. This glow adds a natural warmth to any room, complementing both modern and traditional decor styles.
Custom Orders and Availability
As a limited edition product, the 'On Edge' frame is available only while supplies last. However, Mulbury also offers custom sizing options to ensure you get exactly what you need. If you have a specific size in mind, now is the time to act. Once this unique timber is gone, there won’t be any more.

Hi this is Jerry from Mulbury. Today I want to introduce you to a limited edition frame that we're introducing, it's called on edge, and it's made out of a Canadian Oregon which is a Douglas fir u suda Sugo menes.
The Vintage of this Timber is 1974 - 1975 it came from a structure of a house down in Belcon Road in Boris which was dated 74-75, so the timber would be a lot older than that and it was a clading on the wall, so it's got a lot of weather beaden areas on it and it's got the patiner of all this weather on it, it's absolutely beautiful. When we get the timber it it looks like this, it's got that a bit of weathered gray on it and there's also remnants of uh green paint on it which I was told it's a fashionable color in the 70s in that in that era.
That's what we get so, we dressed this up and let me show you what it's going to look like once we dress it up and and clean it up and rebate it. Once we clean up the Timber and dress it, it it looks like this, so again you got you got your depth of 4 cm there, and you got your width of 2 cm and your artwork sits in there and it's about 3 cm, so that's why we call it on edge because a normal frames are on a flat so we flip this across and we call it on edge.
So this is what your your frame is going to look like. This is a 7x5 so it's a small frame, but I just want to show you closeup the warm honey glow that you get once we oil this uh Douglas for Timber. Your depth there is 4 cm and from the front, to your artwork is 3 cm and this is the the the width across the front, here is about 2 cm.
Now these are available as a limited edition on our website they come in sizes from 7x5, 8x6, 8x10 and A4 and these ones will stand on their own then you got the A3 size and the A3 size like all of them are strung both ways either portrait or landscape um but that one you can't stand up on its own these will because of the 4 cm they should be but again you know the the taller the ones like the a4s you got to be careful a little bit if you bump it they they could fall over.
Our limited edition is available in the in the oil finish although we do custom make them as well so we can make any size at the moment cuz when they're gone they're gone uh at the moment we have the Timber and we can make custom size so if you like what you see go to our website because it's going to be released soon and go to the on edge frames a limited edition and see what size you like and just check it out and um you can you can let us know what you think.
