Today, we're going to talk about the various options that Mulbury offers for how wide your picture frame can be.
First of all, I'll start with the slim picture frame. This frame is 2.5 centimetres wide and 1 centimetre deep. It's perfect for a very subtle look. You can have it with or without a mat board, just like all our frames. It comes with a rebate depth of about 5 to 6 millimetres. That allows for 2 millimetres of glass, another 3 millimetres for the backing board, and then a millimetre or two to accommodate different image thicknesses.
The next one up is our Original frame. This one is 4 centimetres wide and is probably our most popular option. It suits any size image, from a small 6x4 photo right up to something large like an A1-sized picture.
Next up is our Wide picture frame. This one is 8.5 centimetres wide, with a depth of 1 centimetre, just like the Slim and Original frames. It's more suited to larger pictures, but we do make this frame from as small as 8x10 inches and upwards. So, while it's great for larger pieces, it still suits a medium-to-large photo size. This frame also shows off more timber grain and character, with more room for natural holes and markings. Now, our Slim and Original frames can also have some natural holes, but probably not as many as the Wide frame. Something to keep in mind—but it looks even better in real life!
Next up, we have our Chunky frame, and it’s called chunky for a reason! It’s about 6 centimetres wide, but what makes it stand out is the depth—around 3 to 4 centimetres. Sometimes the depth can even go beyond 4 centimetres, depending on the timber. It has a bit of weight to it and plenty of character—grooves, holes, and a mix of different timber tones. Like our other frames, it comes with a standard rebate of 6 millimetres. But because it’s a thick frame, we can cut a deeper rebate if needed. If you have a thicker artwork—say 1 to 4, or even 5 millimetres thick—we can adjust the rebate so it fits perfectly. This avoids the need for a box frame—we can simply modify the depth on this one. A fantastic option if you love character and depth!
Size-wise, we can make the Chunky frame in almost any size you like. We’ve made frames in this style up to 2 or even 3 metres long. For comparison: The Slim frame can go up to about 1.2 or 1.3 metres long. The Original and Wide frames can go up to around 1.5 metres. The Chunky frame can go up to 2 metres, maybe even 3, depending on the timber available.
Next up is our Driftwood frame. Driftwood frames are still made from the same Victorian Ash timber as our other frames, but they have even more character. You're less likely to see holes in this one, but you’ll definitely get natural grooves and knots. I’m not sure if the camera picks it up, but there’s definitely a lot more texture and detail in this style.
Another thing to note is the edges—sometimes they’re straight, sometimes they’re uneven. Usually, we can offer you options for both. One of the best things about this frame is the width flexibility. We can make Driftwood frames anywhere from 6 centimetres wide up to around 13 or even 14 centimetres, depending on the timber we have available.
Here’s an example—this is the same Driftwood timber, but this piece is about 12 to 13 centimetres wide. It has heaps of character—plenty of grain, texture, and variation. So, if you love the idea of an uneven edge and want the option to go thinner or wider, Driftwood is a great choice.
